Jarred Character Sketch

One day last year Jarred Thomas was walking into a big hall with a large group of people. They all went up on the stage and he sat watching. Lights went off and he started to play piano. Up on stage people started to talk and Jarred stopped. He played between scenes of this ongoing play. When the play was finished everyone bowed including Jarred. He created to songs to play during this play and received a great award for playing this music beautifully. Piano isn't all that Jarred is good at; he is also a very talented player of guitar, bass, clarinet and has recently taken up violin which he has excelled in so far.

Teddy Daniels (Shutter Island)

The most important character development for Teddy is the lighthouse scene. This is the scene where everything comes together. We learn who Teddy is and he learns as well. The doctor explains to Teddy who he really is. He doesn't want to believe the doctor but eventually gets flashbacks and believes him.

In this scene Teddy is looking for his partner in the lighthouse. He gets to the top floor and finds the doctor sitting in the chair behind a desk. The doctor explains to him that he is a patient at this mental hospital and has been there for years. Teddy does not believe him and shoots him but the gun is a fake. His partner shows up and along with the doctor explains that he is actually Teddy's psychiatrist and Teddy freaks out and gets hallucinations about his dead wife and passes out.

When Teddy wakes up he has come to the realization of who he actually is. He now knows that he killed his wife and has been denying it and created another character of which he played where he is the good guy that did not kill his wife. Teddy Daniels was actually who he made up and thought he was. His real name is Andrew Laeddis who he believed was the bad guy he was looking for on this island. He came to finally realize that he is Andrew and everyone believed he was cured but then his mind went screwy again and he once again was Teddy Daniels.

Walt Kowalski (Gran Torino)

Walt Kowalski is a grumpy old man in the movie Gran Torino. He is a veteran from the Vietnam War. Walt is a very racist old man and calls everything exactly how he sees it and is not afraid of anything. In one scene he is having a barbeque with his next door Asian neighbour kids. Thao had originally tried to steal Walts Gran Torino and Walt hated him but eventually they came to know eachother and became friends. Thao had a date lined up for that night but had no car so Walt told him he could take the Gran Torino. Walt started off in the movie as a grumpy old man with a hate-on for the world (especially his neighbours) and now was having a barbeque for them and was happy. This scene showed that Walt was actually a generous, kind man with a big heart.

Character Develpment questions

1. I have been reading the Guardians of Ga’Hoole series and I find the characters extremely interesting. Each character has a completely different attitude and way of thinking but in another way they are the same. Twilight is my favourite character, he is the biggest and strongest character and according to me is the most interesting. He calls himself a warrior poet and always sings out a big poem while in war. Each character has their strengths and weaknesses. Gylfie is the navigator but is small, Digger is a great tracker and knows the ground well but isn’t a strong flyer and Soren is a great collier and leader. They are known as the band and are the great heroes of the Great Tree.
2. The characters all met in the first book but all met gradually and not at one time. They met over periods of time and then became great friends. Gylfie and Soren met when they were abducted and after they escaped met Digger and Twilight. Each of the characters slowly learn their skills throughout the series and develop their ways of thinking throughout this time as well. It was definitely effective character description because we slowly learn the mindset and thoughts of the characters.

Malcolm Gladwell on Spaghetti Sauce

Malcolm Gladwell speaks about how Howard Moscowitz proved that our food needs variety in it. As consumers we are unsure of what we actually prefer in our products. We don’t know what we like until we have eaten it and discover this whole other world of flavours. Moscowitz proved that not everyone likes the same thing. There needs to be different varieties of our products to meet the needs and wants of everyone. For spaghetti sauce he found that there are three groups of people for the sauce. These groups are plain, spicy, and chunky. He gathered up a bunch of people and got them to rate a bunch of different spaghetti sauces out of 100. The information gathered was all over the board. Howard found out that people like the variety and not everyone has the same taste buds. That is why Prego made many different varieties of spaghetti sauce and became the dominant spaghetti sauce manufacturer. Howard made it possible.

We don’t all like the same kinds of music. There are many different kinds of music for people to listen to now. There is rock, rap, country, pop, hip-hop, r&b, techno, classical and many other kinds. Even if we like one of these kinds we still won’t like all of it. There are so many different styles of each of these different forms of music. For example there are many different styles of rock; there is metal, punk, screamo, goth, light and many other ones. Even these different styles have substyles like many different kinds of metal rock. Everyone has their different tastes in these kinds of music, and people can be categorized into their different tastes. I hate pop music and country while lots of other people prefer these kinds and not like the rock music like I prefer.

Canada, Our Home

Canada, our home,
And native land
Where our kindness and generosity
Sit quietly like a bird
In the hand
A hockey stick rises
And drops in a dash
The puck goes flying
Making the goal light
Start to flash
The cameras of tourists
Taking pictures of mountains and rivers
Of our great landscape which
Gives you the shivers
And goose bumps form
When the team is up two to one
And time is up
The party has begun
It’s the Canada Day celebration
Cleaning garbage and partying
Across the nation
We are Canada
We stand for all to see
We are Canada
We stand on guard for thee

Good Poetry

Good poetry is like a good art piece. It is supposed to capture our eyes, mind, heart and soul. The reader is meant to be hypothetically thrown into the writers thoughts. It is not about rhymes, figures of speech or even good story-telling; instead it is about being able to vividly describe the picture in the writers head and put the reader there. The reader should be able to paint this mental picture in their head. They are there, they know. This is what makes poems good.

What is Canada?

Canada, a lush land of rolling hills and bright, glistening prairies. Our mountains reach out and touch the clouds while dividing our Westernmost provinces. Thousands of twisting, beautiful rivers and streams shine and flow to connect our vast, wonderful lakes. From North to South, and East to West this extremely large country is all that is great and bring-a-tear-to-your-eye beautiful in this world.

We aren't all the stereotypes like the world so believes about us. "Eh" is not a word that comes after every one of our sentences, however it is used in every sentence that does not end in a long "A" sound. After hooking up the dog sled in the morning we feed our 700 pound polar bears with the leftover seal blubber from last night's meal. We don't have penguins like many may think; it's too cold for them here. We all live in igloos and all play professional hockey and since there are only a few hundred of us we know everyone by name. We can only count to three, that's why there are 3 periods in hockey; 3 goals are a hat trick; and there are 3 teams in the West and 3 in the East. The only thing that interests us are hockey and beer. We learned everything we know from Don Cherry who we also see as the Pope of Canada. This is what it truly means to be Canadian. EH
